Plastic pollution in numbers

Let’s have a look on how the plastic waste problem is translated in numbers:
  • Only around 9% of global plastics are recycled each year.
  • Half of all plastics ever manufactured have been made in the last 15 years.
  • Today, we produce about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year.
  • Production is expected to double by 2050. If historic growth trends continue, global production of primary plastic is forecasted to reach 1,100 million tonnes by 2050.
  • Approximately 36 per cent of all plastics produced are used in packaging, including single-use plastic products for food and beverage containers, approximately 85 percent of which end up in landfills or as unregulated waste.
  • A new study (LINK) found that 60% of “home-compostable plastics” didn’t fully break down in home compost bins, leading to them ending up in the soil and the waterways. (LINK) This is often due to lack of real-world testing and to greenwashing campaigns that make promises that don't hold up in reality.
